Why he is 33
Remember when Justin Timberlake used to be a pop star? Good, because neither do we. The former ‘N Syncer and subsequent prince of pop hasn’t released a full-length album since his instant-classic FutureSex/LoveSounds topped the charts in 2006. Instead, Timberlake has chosen to try his hand at pretty much everything else. His men’s fashion line, William Rast, is a mainstay at New York Fashion Week, and his duties as host of Saturday Night Live earned him an Emmy. Despite his proven comedic skills (men everywhere are still trying to insert their penises into boxes), Timberlake has had trouble breaking through as a serious dramatic actor. His turns in Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan showed slivers of potential, but his decision to star in Mike Myers’ cataclysmic The Love Guru made us question whether the once-invincible Timberlake had lost his edge.
After many stop-and-starts, it looks like Timberlake’s transition from musician to serious actor may be complete. His stunning turn as sleazy Napster founder Sean Parker in this year’s most talked-about film, The Social Network, has earned him a ton of Oscar buzz, as well as lead roles in a string of upcoming high-profile films. The only way Timberlake’s year could have been better is if he got to go home everyday to someone like, say, Jessica Biel. Oh, wait.
